Kids are cute, right? Today's OFPOD has one, and a rather young someone else. Here's Bruce Schneier with our daughter Megen, from Midwestcon 1984. I suspect Bruce was trying to teach her how to encrypt the name badge she's holding, thus accounting for Megen's somewhat bemused look.

We didn't know when this skinny young kid started hanging around that we'd become good friends. But I'm glad it turned out that way.

I met that skinny young kid when he was still in high school. I'm simultaneously mildly surprised and completely unsurprised at how he turned out.

Bruce gives me credit for talking him into going to Midwestcon and introducing him to my friends there. That's something I'll happily take credit for.

You deserve that credit.

I really liked seeing that photo of you from back then -- the one Steve posted yesterday or the day before. Thirty years ago was a surprisingly long time.

Sometimes it seems like such a short time ago. Good times, good memories. Good friends!

It looks like he has a smashed finger. I wonder what that was about?

I noticed the blackened fingernail as well. Ask him if he remembers -- I'd be curious.

Great. Then we can have a contest: who can come up with the best fictitious reason for Bruce to have smashed his finger? Ready? Go!

*I* think Bruce had tried to steal an Enigma machine, but didn't quite realize how hefty the damned thing was and managed to drop it on his finger as he tried to get it out of the display case. Alarms went off, but he managed (luckily for us) to elude capture.

Just a minute: I knew that rather young someone else back then! We were both in Minneapa in the summer of '82. I think I'd met him during one of his visits to Minneapolis/trips to Minicon, but we were both in the roomshare of 5 fans that Laurie Mann put together for Chicon IV.

Fun photo. The years, they fly.
