We had a new visitor at the feeder yesterday: a blue jay. I managed to get one bad, obscured shot of him before he took off. But I'll be watching for him for a better one...

Blue Jay Glimpse

Blue Jays are uncooperative. They take flight at the slightest movement or noise. The only photos I have of bluejays, I got through the kitchen window.

That's pretty much what happened with this one. I happened to be sitting on the deck with my camera when it flew in. I lifted the camera, fired off the one shot, and the bird was gone the next second. I saw it again this morning and grabbed my camera, but as soon as I cracked the screen door so I wasn't shooting through dirty glass and screen, it was gone again.

Patience will obviously be needed... (not something I'm good with).

Blue Jays

Well, if you decide to upgrade the bird diner, and put in a spa (bird bath) you will be able to get all the action pics of jays you could ever want! They love bird baths... the only issue is when they're done, you will need to refill the bath... They're 'enthusiastic' in the bath!

We haven't seen Jays here in the Chicagoland area for a number of years, Jay's, like Flickers, and Grackles are affected by the West Nile Virus. One good thing, thoiugh. A block here in Oak Park had a large murder of Crows living on it. Nothing would move them off the block, the residents tried all the supposed solutions, but nothing worked. West Nile hit Chicagoland, and unfortunately, the murder was decimated. I think after a few years, it's gone completely. The residents are mostly happy about it.
