It occurs to me...

...that if the person you love doesn't already know and feel that, then giving him/her chocolate, flowers, and/or various heart-shaped accouterments isn't going to accomplish a great deal.

Indeed. I just am contending that unless the love/affection is there in the first place, the symbols (the flowers, the candy, etc) have very little meaning.

Oh, I don't know. Surprise can be nice, too. (Or not nice, depending.) I think these things have meaning if they do, and don't if they don't.
