According to several news reports, Sarah Palin is resigning in the midst of her term as Governor of Alsaka.  Huh...  That seems to be a bizarre move, and not one a person who is considering running for POTUS should take...  I guess we'll see how this all falls out.  Even the Republican pundits seem to be scratching their heads over this one.

I caught a few minutes of the coverage on Fox NewsBS as I was switching channels. They were lamenting the vile state of political discourse that would cause such a promising politician to step out of the political arena.

Thus providing more evidence that rightwingers are oblivious to irony.

I suppose that's possible, but it seems to me that this move kills any presidential aspirations she might have. It would cerainly give fodder to any opposing candidate, either within her own party during the primaries or to (presumably) Obama in the general election.

The same could be true in a Sematorial election -- as one Republican strategist (can't remember the name...) said: "Quitting isn't exactly one of our conservative values."

The top three theories I've heard are: 1) sex scandal, 2) indictment, and/or 3) money. As in, she can't collect for her multi-million dollar book deal until she's not a state employee any more. This latter is my fave theory.

Mine too. It's always about the money. And not just a book deal, imagine the speaking fees.

Unless of course there's a scandal.

You may well be right. At the moment, I'll just wait and see what falls out over the next few days. It feels like the other shoe is up there waiting to drop.

The news coverage is just dreadful (at least on CNN, MSNBC, and Faux News) -- everyone's making wild speculations about why she did this rather than just saying "Here are the facts as we know them at the moment..."

But it beats 24/7 Michael Jackson coverage.

My first thought was that she and her family are going to be the "stars" in a new TV reality show. I don't think I seriously believe that, but really -- they're perfect for our tabloid nation.

I'm thinking that resigning midterm for reasons other than health or family crisis should send a message to the voters that a politician doesn't feel any responsibility to his/her constituents. I thought the same thing about Newt Gingrich when he resigned right after the election. I was glad he was gone from Congress, but thought that he'd shafted the people who had just re-elected him.
