Maine has just legalized same sex marriage.  Doubtless hundreds of thousands of heterosexual married couples have just watched their marriages shatter and fall apart in an instant, and are now wandering about aimlessly with a shocked look on their faces.  What, that didn't happen?

What I particularly liked about it was the governor saying, explicitly, that no religion has to recognize a gay marriage if they don't want to. He's drawing a very clear line between government and religion, and reaffirming that this is a civil-rights issue, not a moralistic one.

I hope that will shut up at least some of the religious objections. The whole "We'll be forced to perform marriage for GAYS!" crap has just taken a direct slapdown.
