"The Fields of Athenry" by Pete St. John is our Pandemic World World Basement Tape recording for today. It's a relatively modern Irish ballad (1979) but is set in the famine years of the 1840s. It's also one of the best-known Irish songs, not just because of Paddy Reilly's and other recordings of the tune, but because the song has been adopted by the fans at Irish sporting events—hurling, rugby, Gaelic football, 'regular' football (what we'd call soccer here)—sometimes, with the words changed, and they often sing it loud and lustfully as the games are played. So feel free to join in loud and lustfully!
As aways, a First Take, wabi sabi recording that simply is what it is. Revel in the imperfections! You may subscribe to this channel (sleighwriter) is you wish, or leave a comment, or just wait patiently for the next offering. You choice. No pressure. It's not like I'm doing these for $$$.
