I'm an idiot.
Yeah, I know that's not a new revelation to anyone who knows me well, but... My most recent idiocy happened, oh, three months or so ago, when my left knee decided to give out when I tried to stop suddenly walking into the kitchen. Yep, walking into the kitchen. Not on the mat in aikido, not hauling around all the band equipment, not doing anything strenuous, just walking into the kitchen. For the next several days, I had to use a cane as support since the knee would just buckle under me with no warning whatsoever.
Denise told me to call our orthopod. "I will," I told her, "if it doesn't get better..." She gave me That Look.
And it did sorta get better. The knee stopped going out on me, but it remained somewhat sore when stressed, it didn't like all the getting up off the mat required in aikido (though I did wear a brace on the knee), and I could no longer manage to fold that knee underneath me sufficiently to sit seiza.
Did I call the doctor? Uh, no. Denise even checked to make certain that he was in my new insurance group (he was), and put his number of my desk. "Oh, it's feeling a little better every week," I told her and myself.
It was. Somewhat, anyway. In fact, last week it was feeling better enough that I didn't wear the brace when I taught my aikido class last Thursday. No problem. And because that had gone fine, I also didn't wear the brace when I took Charlie's Tuesday night class, which was a lot of fun and rather energetic. The knee was a little sore afterward, but seemed fine enough.
But it was really sore Wednesday when I woke up, I was hobbling around the house. And even though I wore the brace again when I taught my Thursday class, afterward the knee was complaining and aching constantly. I was limping significantly and walking up the steps of the house was, umm, Not Fun.
"You're calling the doctor," Denise said. "Right now." So I have an appointment to see him in early July. I'm not looking forward to what I'm anticipating he's going to say.
As I said, I'm an idiot... But you knew that. I wonder if I should try taking the Saturday morning aikido class?
