Looking for a book to give as a holiday present? I have one for you (and no, it’s NOT one of mine…): Julie E. Czerneda’s TURN OF LIGHT. Full Disclosure: at this point, I haven’t finished the (very long) book because it’s the end of the semester and I’ve been buried in student fiction I have to read, but damn it, Julie’s book is that good! I keep sneaking a few pages of it in between everything else I have to read, and I’m dearly looking forward to the coming break when I can just sink into the remainder of the novel.
Julie has a deft and lovely touch with words, and I’m deeply impressed by her ability to portray an ‘ordinary’ world that has another bubbling underneath the façade. Her characters are genuine and marvelously rounded, the world is rich and realistic, stuffed with both ordinary tasks and magical wonders, and each scene deepens the tension between reality and the unseen.
Get the book. Read it. You’ll understand my going utterly fanboy about it once you do.
