These house finches appear to be raptly watching something. I'm not certain what. Perhaps the cardinals were sending up white smoke from the nearby tree.
The cardinals in my yard (four pairs plus yearlings and this year's hatching, so at least a dozen) are almost always squabbling. I don't think they'd ever manage to send up white smoke. Black smoke, yes....
