Niagara Falls is impressive, but it's difficult to take a picture of the falls that isn't something you've seen a few million times before, and better. Below there's a shot of the whole of Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side. It's OK, but it looks like your standard postcard shot. It's better, I think, to focus on a portion of the falls rather than trying to capture the whole. The second shot is just the American edge of Horseshoe Falls (as seen from Canada); and hey, if you look very closely, there's a gull coasting across the face of the cascade.

Sometimes it's pretty cool to get a "standard postcard shot". I agree that focusing on a detail is often more interesting than photographing the whole picture. It's fascinating to see things in a photo that weren't obvious when looking at something in real life.
