Denise and I went to see the new Captain America movie tonight... and I realized as I was watching it that I've stopped enjoying superhero movies like this that are 75% CGI over-the-top action and hyper-violence (I lost count in the first ten minutes how many people died), and about 25% actual story.

I want movies that reverse the percentage, where genuine characterization and story dominate, and *not* the action. I want stories where, if someone is hurt or dies, there are repercussions and grief and emotions. Movies like this have no heart; they're nothing but adrenaline and movement, without any reflection about what they're actually saying.

I'm tired of them. They're popcorn and empty calories. I'd like actual nutrition in my movies... and in my books as well.

What about you?

You appear to have moved out of the "target market" category. I actually suspect that happened long ago, about the time you "grew up" (whatever that phrase means).

It's actually been a long time since I've seen a movie in a theater (the last one was "Monsters U" at the Riverview, the one before that was befoe we brought A home), but when I read the reviews of movies, the "summer blockbusters" usually leave me indifferent, at best.

Sounds like you want Ang Lee's Hulk. My favorite of the recent set of superhero movies and, by far, the biggest bomb at the box office.

I swear

There's at least five solid minutes of plot in there somewhere...

I reached this point when the first of the Spider-Man reboots came out with Andrew Garfield and although I knew friends would be talking about it, I realized I just couldn't face sitting through it. Cutting the thread of "obligation" was very liberating and I've never regretted it.

I'm with you. The entire Avengers line of films leave me bored. I just find them so dull.

However, I LOVED Pacific Rim, partly because kaiju vs jaagers and mostly because the character interaction worked for me.
