For Mother's Day, here's our cardinal mom on the ground, giving you a look. For the last three years or so, we've had the same pair of cardinals around our house - for those who don't know, cardinals tend to mate for life. She isn't yet nesting, we don't think, but should be soon.

I've had two Unexpected Birds in my yard this weekend: Yesterday a Baltimore Oriole (I've only seen one other in this area in all my years here) and today a young male Red-Winged Blackbird, not yet in his full adult feathers (I see lots of them at the nearby Detroit Zoo, but my yard's too far from water to be interesting to them).
