A cardinal couple having breakfast, the male in front, the female on the back of the feeder. Both had their crests lowered at the moment of the picture, making them not quite look like cardinals.

Cardinal Couple Dining Together

How do you get the birds to pose for you like that? :-)

If you see what looks like a female cardinal, only with a dark beak, that's a juvenile. If you hear what sounds like a cricket on speed, that's probably a cardinal nestling.

I just happened to be there at the right time. The female showed up first (I took a picture of her on the top of the feeder), and I was muttering about her hiding behind the feeder tube, when the male landed on the other side. :-)

I hope to see some juveniles later this year -- judging from the birds I've seen at the feeder, I think we have at least two nesting pairs in the immediate neighborhood.
