The New Space Race

So China has launched the first module of a space station. Neil Armstrong commented that "For a country that did so much for so long to achieve a leadership position in space exploration and exploitation, this is viewed by many as lamentably embarrassing and unacceptable."

So what are your thoughts? Is this a signal that the exploratory, "we can do anything" spirit that once characterized American culture has vanished? Does this signal that America is passing into decline? Or is it not significant at all in the greater scheme of things?

Whatever your answer, we'll probably be able to say whether you're right or wrong in another half-century or so…
