Phoenix Pick is offering DARK WATER'S EMBRACE as its free e-book of the month for August. DWE is certainly one of my favorite books, winning the Spectrum Award for Best Novel and garnering wide critical praise.
To get the free e-book, click here, then click on the link at the top for "Stephen Leigh", and then on the "Free Ebook of the Month" below the cover image. The coupon code you'll need is is "9991300".
Then download the format you want.
While you're there, take a look at the rest of the catalog that Phoenix Pick offers -- there are some fine works there that have been otherwise out-of-print for awhile. The sequel to DWE, SPEAKING STONES, is there also. And, of course, Phoenix Pick also offer trade paperback versions of the books.
Have fun!
"The fact is that Stephen Leigh's new novel is a fine piece of work and one that deserves to reach a wide readership." - Michael M. Levy, reviewing in the NY Review of Science Fiction, July 1998
"If the judges for the Lambda Award... will consider books that examine truly alternative sex roles, 'Dark Water's Embrace' will be a strong contender." - John R. Alden, reviewing in the Plain Dealer, 6/7/98
"Stephen Leigh has crafted a gripping picture of a harsh world and human intolerance." - Scott W. Schumack, reviewing in Starlog, July 1998
"An intelligent, carefully constructed novel with an interesting scientific puzzle..." - Don D'Ammassa, reviewing in Science Fiction Chronicle
" 'Dark Water's Embrace' is an intriguing, intelligent and thought provoking study of gender, society and the human will to survive against all odds. It is a novel that brings to mind the very best offered by Nicola Griffith, Melissa Scott, Sheri Tepper and Ursula K. LeGuin." - Patrick M. Heffernan, reviewing in Mysterious Galaxy.

Doing some quick googling, I learn that Kindle supports .AZW (Kindle-specific), .TXT, .MOBI, and .PRC. Amazon supposedly can convert PDFs for a .10 fee...

I presume that the website -- whatever company that is -- wants to keep people on the site buying ebooks, so they don't just put the book up as a freebee on the Amazon site.
I downloaded the pdf. I'll convert it and see how it goes.
