If Israel wished to pursue the best possible strategy to damage their already shaky international reputation, as well as do everything possible to strip away what little support they have in the Middle East, then they couldn't have come up with a better plan than to raid civilian relief ships in international waters and kill nine (at least) of those aboard.

Just saying...

Whoopsie!

If Turkey really wanted to turn the screws on both Israel and the US... Remember that Turkey is a NATO member. They could theoritically invoke articles 5 and 6 of the North Atlantic Charter. This is what the US did after the attacks on 9/11 and that's why we had German and Dutch AWACS planes helping out, and why there are NATO troops in Afganistian.

Articles 5 and 6, are basically the 'All for one, one for all" parts of the charter. NATO considers an attack on one member an attack on all.

I really don't understand why this country's position on Israel has always been "support them no matter what." I don't think they've earned unconditional support, and this just proves it.

For that matter, attacking a convoy in international waters could be considered an act of piracy and the act of a rogue state.

I'm with you on that. "Support no matter what" isn't a position anyone should take in regards to a country, whether it another country or your own. Wrong is wrong.

They're claiming that the ships refused a proper (presumably legal) inspection, and that when they boarded, they were attacked.

I'm always hesitant to rush to judgment when looking from a distance at a situation that is ugly on all sides.

I'm thinking the Israeli government doesn't give a fuck what the rest of the world thinks. They figure that since they have nuclear weapons and the United States will always side with them, nobody can do anything to them. I'm afraid they're right about that.

Call me cynical, but I think it's domestic politics. AIPAC has a lot of U.S. politicians in the same pocket where it keeps its wallet.
