Denise and I are currently in the middle of a biology experiment -- making the family yogurt (or 'laban' as her family calls it).  Waiting for the milk to cool a bit before adding the starter from her Mom's refrigerator.  We'll let you know how it turns out...

Yogurt makers do provide a controlled temperature, for sure. I did mine in the old country way: wrapping the jar in kitchen towels and putting it in the oven.

So, do you have a pilot light that is always on in your oven? Ours is an electric start so it isn't warm unless on, but we did put it in the oven with towels around the jars for warmth, mainly to keep it out of harms way. I just put them in the fridge and I checked one jar and it seemed thin, but I am hoping that it will thicken in the fridge.

No, we have an electric oven. I turned on the light that's in there, and it warmed up the over a little tiny bit more. The oven was noticeably warmer than the kitchen when I took the laban out after about 6 hours.
