The first draft of A Magic of Dawn is done! The current "state of the manuscript' is 171,500 words. For those who remember -- or care -- that I once said the first draft would come in at about 150,000 words, well, actually it did. The "first draft" manuscript I keep is almost exactly 150,000 words. But with the exception of the last 30,000 words, the document in my Scrivener file has been through the revision pass, where I changed things substantially and added a viewpoint character as well -- hence the 171,500 count.
Now I need to go back and do the revision pass through those last 30,000, which are a mix of first and second draft at this point. I need to bring them up to the state of the larger front of the manuscript, so I expect that when that polishing/revision is done, the novel will be closer to 175,000 words. Or perhaps more. Or perhaps less. We'll see.
I'm figuring it should take a week or so to do that. Then it's off to Sheila and my first readers for their input.
But for now, huzzah! I have a complete manuscript!
