Anyone else have a Facebook presence? After some urging by other writers, I've finally signed up on Facebook...

ETA: Oh, in case anyone wants to find me on facebook, I'm there under the stealthy moniker of "Stephen Leigh"...

What is it that you like about it? What does it give you that LJ doesn't?

What does it give you that LJ doesn't?

you can't really compare it to lj. lj is a blog network, Facebook is a social network.

so -- on a blog it's what you say.
a social network is about who you know.
make sense?

it's just a place where people can connect to each other, follow what each one is up to via status updates, post photos, invite people to events and suchlike stuff.

I like playing the games there, but most people like it because it allows them to re-connect or keep in touch with friends and family. the photos and status updates are what people love most it seems.

Just have fun -- you do that, you'll probably cop onto what to do with it easily enough and enjoy yourself there.

I like to be able to quickly read the status updates, and see the photos people post; it's different enough from LJ that I don't feel like having both is a waste of time.

I do. I signed up after my wife did and was having a good time.
It doesn't serve the same purpose as LJ. Using Facebook, I've reconnected with numerous friends from elementary school, high school, and college and learned that one has gotten a divorce and one has moved to Sao Paolo. These are people, in many cases, who would not have an LJ, or whose LJ I wouldn't be able to find. Facebook makes it a lot easier to find people.

It's like Twitter but with a better interface. Livejournal is a place for writing. Facebook is not.

for the record, i hate Twitter.

I've been on Facebook for a few weeks now. It was nice reconnecting to old friends (not that we've done much but send each other fish), and I can see how some Flash Crowd type communities could be useful, but I really don't see all the excitement. It's the 4th most hit site on the net (according to Alexa, irrc), and I would guess that's mostly people refreshing their pages.

Don't know about the games or snowball fights. I'm fairly easy to find on FB...

I am cleverly hidden under the facebook moniker Anton Strout.

I do. Like others have said, it's another way to keep track of people; I found three of my middle school friends there. Otherwise bunches of authors & agents are on there. There's lots of goofy little games like lil' green patch (send plants, save some rainforest) and weird things that get a little old after a while. I like LJ better, though they do similar things, like you can still post notes and pictures and links and stories and somehow link to your LJ blog in Facebook. I don't like the home page format in Facebook so much, because I don't really care that X, Y, and Z became friends with A, or that they're a fan of this or that or joined a cause. It's a little sortable though so you can just get the status updates, which is what your friends are doing. It's more immediate and less thoughtful than LJ.

I'm on.

As others say, once you hang out for about 6 months, amazing numbers of people from college, high school (!), long lost friends, etc begin to appear. It's been fun.

The more extended network can be helpful in ways LJ isn't. I recently used it to get something printed out by a friend in London and couriered to Oxford, rather than couriering from here (for the record, FedEx failed utterly in doing that task).

I'm there. as Laura Jean in Mpls MN.

I see you listed with several other S.L. as well two of whom do not yet have friends, maybe they are one in the same.

Either list a little more info like location so I know which one is you and I'll request your friendship or send me a friend request.

Heh ... very stealthy. I'm just as unnoticeable as Steve Nagy. ;-)

I;m there. Haven't been there for long, but I AM there. Feel free to friend me!

I'm there, too, although I find it fairly strange. About 75% of the updates are totally ignorable (friends joining groups or sending each other weird stuff), but about 25% do help you know what's going on with friends of yours, with quicker, more ephemeral updates than people are likely to post on LJ. Plus, as others have noted, every once in a while an old friend will get back in touch. However, I wouldn't miss it if it weren't there.

I'm there "Gary Mattingly" but not very active on it. San Francisco, CA. Amazingly enough there are 9 Gary Mattinglys there.
