After a stirring opening to the midterm elections when the members of Toast! started their own political party -- the Beer Party -- and a rally in Washington DC that drew nearly as many attendees as there are people in the band, it appears that the dream is dead. The Beer Party, which ran under the slogan "Don't spill on me!", strongly believed that bipartisan drinking of beer would solve many of the issues in Washington.
However, the party managed to pick up exactly none of the offices for which they ran. Their highest hopes were for Tom Vogel, where polls indicated he was in a tight race with his opponent, who had happened to pass away two weeks ago. However, Tom lost by a narrow 98 - 2% margin. Still, he fared better than Steve Leigh, who found out that even his parents voted for his opponent.
Tom Steele, spokesperson for the Beer Party, vowed to fight on. "We have better offerings on tap," he said. "Things have not yet come to a head, nor have we yet passed beyond the pale ale. Steve Gallant is hopping mad, and Mike Russell claims that losses like this can only happen once in a Blue Moon."
Dale Lewis stoutly refused to comment at all.
However, the entire Beer Party will be on hand at Silverton Cafe this Friday evening from 8:30 - 12:30, where we'll be trying to get rid of all of our extra yard signs. Come on out for an evening of Toast! -- and whether your candidates won or lose, you can celebrate or drown your sorrows while we play!
