Jackie Kessler skewers Harlequin and their decision to launch "Harlequin Horizons" -- a vanity press. Basically, it appears that Harlequin has decided they can make a ton of money from their slush pile by pointing their rejected would-be authors to a Harlequin-branded vanity press, where they can pay to have their work printed: without editing, without marketing, without distribution.
Jackie does a great job of tearing apart Harlequin's self-serving press release and pointing out the issues behind it. I hope SFWA would have the same courage that RWA is displaying in revoking Harlequin's status as a 'professional' market for their members (though SFWA doesn't have the 'muscle' with the publishers of the genre that RWA has with theirs...)
