Lest everyone think I'm always happy with Apple stuff...

Along with the new iWork, I also picked up the new iLife suite. iTunes is fine, but I already had the enw version. I haven't had a chance yet to play with the new Garageband, but the old Garageband was fine for my purposes. iPhoto is fine (and the new "Events" view is a great addition), but again that wasn't enough reason to upgrade. I don't use iMovie or iDVD.

But... there's iWeb, which I do use for my website. One thing the old iWeb couldn't do was handle any HTML at all, though there was shareware (iWeb Enhancer) that allowed you to do that. The new iWeb was supposed to directly handle snippets of HTML, and I was looking forward to that capability. So I upgraded.

It's been a disaster...

When I started the new iWeb, it asked me to find the domain.site file it uses. That in itself was strange -- why in the world should an upgrade have to ask where you keep the file it uses? Shouldn't it have picked that up from the previous version? But... I located the file and iWeb 'updated' it. My site opened, and I fooled around with it some and changed the theme for the site (which I'd been wanting to do).

Now, iWeb allows you to either upload the site to Apple's .Mac area if you're a subscriber, or to publish the site to a folder on your computer, from where you can FTP the files to a host server -- which is what I do. Luckily, I had iWeb publish the site to a new folder rather than the one I'd been using, or it would have overwritten the old site.

Because as soon as I uploaded the new site, kicked up Safari and eagerly went to see it, I was stunned to find that none of the graphic touches (like reflections and frames) were there, the text and links appeared wonky, and -- most importantly -- the navigational bar at the top of every page was missing, replaced by a single small black dot off to the left.

The site was utterly and completely useless. Impossible to navigate and ugly.

I checked in Firefox. Same result. I went to the folder on my computer and dragged one of the HTML files for the site directly to Safari and opened it up locally -- and locally, it appeared just as it was supposed to appear. Perfect. Hmm...

This tells me (I think) that the new iWeb isn't placing all the support files into the site folder, but instead having the site pull from other local files it's stuck somewhere else. This is not acceptable. All the files necessary for the site need to be in one folder, so they can be uploaded easily. Nor do I have the CSS/HTML competence to know what files it needs and where it's looking for them.

Since I (luckily) had the old folder, I FTP'd the old files back to the server -- and lo, the site was back as it had been. But here's the problem: iWeb has (of course) overwritten the old version of the program as well as the domain.site file. While I can restore the site back to the way it was before the 'upgrade' I can't change the site now -- at least not until Apple fixes this issue.

The 'Support' area has been pretty much useless. There seems to be no way to directly send e-mail to Apple and receive a response (if they have such a link, they've hidden it well or I've somehow missed it). Yes, I could call support, but I've no inclination to sit on the phone long enough to do that. There's a discussion forum for iWeb (where there are literally dozens and dozens of irate messages from people whose sites the new iWeb has killed), and people are suggesting solutions, but I've tried a few of those to no avail.

If there's no solution in the next few days, then I'll need to go back to Freeway Pro and put together a new site from scratch -- which would take days and does not make me a happy camper.

So no, I'm not happy with the new iWeb. Quite the opposite, in fact. I'm wishing I'd never upgraded...

You're review matches what people are saying about the iMovie upgrade as well...

I've heard some of that... but then I don't take enough video to worry about it.

Well that's craptacular. Hope you find a solution soon and you're back to less frustrating endeavors.

Well, I've found an answer (see my latest post), but it's no less frustrating. :-)
