Denise and I went down to Northside Taven tonight to listen to the Q'tet, for whom our son Devon's the drummer. I brought along my newly-fretless Roscoe, since Nick, the Q'tet's bassist, also plays a five-string Keith Roscoe. His is fretted, though he's comfortable playing fretless.
I showed Nick the bass; he snatched it up, fiddled with it a moment, then asked if he could play it. So for the first set, he did -- Nick's a monster on bass, far better than I am, and so I got a good sense of what the bass could sound like, and it was wonderful.
Practice, practice, practice!
