House Martins are a protected species of bird in France (or at least they were when we were then several years ago). You'd see their mud-built nests quite frequently under the eaves of older houses; at the Chateau Usse, martins were flying around over the place.

So here are two pictures of the unique nests they build. The first is Chateau Usse, where you can see several nest along the roofline. One bird is captured in flight -- though what I like better is the perfect shadow of one on the wall. The second picture I snapped at the gîte where we were staying; a close-up of a martin nest.
