All hail the plain brown birds! Here's a female house finch in the pine tree next to the deck. The males might get more attention because of their red heads, but I love the patterning of the females.

If you ever see a bird patterned something like that but too big to be a house finch, she's probably a female Red-Winged Blackbird. The females look nothing like the males.
Somebody in Flickr commented on this photo that I'd misidentified the bird, and that it must be a hawk. ::rolls eyes:: Well, it's hard to judge the shape of the beak from that angle.
