In pictures of cardinals that I've seen in various places, there's a decided preference to show the male, since the plumage is so striking. The female cardinal is often ignored. But I think that female is also interesting and more subtle, not quite so in-your-face-hey-I'm-RED.

I think female cardinals are just as pretty as the males, too. I feel the same way about peahens. The peacocks get all the attention, but the peahens have beautiful plumage, too, just not as flashy. And peachicks are adorable, miniature copies of their mother complete with the self-assured strut and air of entitlement.
