OK, here's a two-parter. Awhile back, I posted a pic of a male and female cardinal, remarking that since they both had their crests down, aside from coloration they didn't have that classic 'cardinal' look. Someone commented that they weren't aware that cardinals could lower their crests at will.
Well, here's a sequence that shows it. Pic 1 shows a female cardinal on a feeder with a sparrow. The sparrow moved suddenly, and up went the crest (Pic 2). The photos were taken a few seconds apart -- you can see how the sparrow moved.
