The first full revision of CROW OF CONNEMARA is done! (Yes, I celebrated with a few fingers of Laphroaig Quarter Cask.)
The "first draft" -- which given the way I write consists of a bit of genuine first draft, but is mostly second draft and even some third draft sections -- came in at 82,500 words. The just completed revision (which means some stuff is now second draft, but the bulk is third and fourth draft, with occasional bits of fifth draft) weighs in at 101,400 words. Yep, almost 19,000 words longer.
That's usual for me, too. In writing the first draft, I realized that for proper foreshadowing of what happens in the end, I was going to need to add a few chapters -- that's where the great bulk of the additional words came in.
Denise is now reading the last 20,000 words or so of the book and will be giving me her feedback. After that, I intend to make another revision pass through the book (which, I suspect, will end up roughly the same length, as while I anticipate having to make a few not-insignificant changes based on Denise's thoughts and some notes of my own, the material I cut will probably be about balanced out by stuff I add.) That revision pass also probably shouldn't take too long -- maybe a few weeks.
At that point, I'll have a decent draft to submit to my editor as well as a few first readers. Then there will come yet-another revision pass to address those critiques (especially Sheila's comments)… and hopefully we'll be done except for the nit-picking of the copy editors and CROW can be placed in DAW's publishing schedule.
But I'm getting way ahead of myself. For right now, YAY! The revision is done!
