This is beyond sad and beyond outrageous. Congress, with bipartisan support and as part of the National Defense Authorization Act, folded into that legislation the Levin/McCain detention bill, which authorizes the U.S. military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians, including American citizens, anywhere in the world. President Obama, who had (not for reasons of civil liberties, mind you) always insisted he would veto that bill, has changed his mind and decided to sign it.
You did catch that, right? The US military can now, if they wish, grab anyone they want, anywhere they wish, and detain them indefinitely without trial, charge, or explanation. You can now be legally 'disappeared' in the United States.
Hey, anyone who believes the constitution was a great document -- you just lost your rights under that document. And, with few exceptions, no one much noticed. If you were disgusted by the loss of civil liberties in the wake of 9/11 under the Bush administration, well, the Obama administration has just re-affirmed those civil rights grabs.
Somewhere, Joe McCarthy is applauding.
