OK... so after people saying that Cover #2 was an improvement but not enough of one, I have a new version. I did have yet another cover mock-up I might have used had I been able to obtain permission from the photographer to both use his/her photo and also alter it somewhat significantly, but I wasn't able to get in contact with anyone who seemed to actually have rights for the shot -- and therefore I won't show it here, either...

However, cover #3 for THE WOODS is now up and live (at Amazon and B&N, at least). The credit for this cover goes to the fabulous Kyle Cassidy ([livejournal.com profile] kylecassidy here on LJ), who let me know that he was going to have access to a couple models for a workshop he was teaching, and that he'd see if he could come up with something that fit the novel. I sent him the passage where the young woman is described so he'd know what I had in my head...

Kyle sent several shots, and the one below is the one I liked best: I love the moodiness of it, the composition, the expression on the model's face... Kyle sent me a mock-up and the file, and so this is pretty much Kyle's cover design... and I like it very much. I hope you will also. Here it is:

So if you were waiting for a better cover before purchasing THE WOODS, well hey, now's the time! Go grab it! And we'll see whether a more professional-looking cover actually makes a difference in sales...
