I really enjoy watching football -- the real kind, not the faux-fottball we Americans have. I'm having a great time watching the World Cup games; just watched New Zealand play an incredible game against Italy, which was supposed to destroy the New Zealnders, who instead pulled out a 1-1 draw.

But... I dohave to say that I don't enjoy the play-acting by the players, who if they get brushed by an opponent's jersey go down writhing in fake pain and holding their head, yet s omehow bounce up a moment later and are perfectly fine again. Amazing recuperative powers, these footballers have! The Italians are especially good at it; they seem to fall if you even look at them harshly...

Luckily, good referees aren't all that impressed by their acting abilities...

The Italians have indeed raised futbol diving to art form, and their skill is surpassed only by Christiano Rinaldo and the Portuguese.

My children are sturdier than those people!

David and I make fun of the Italians and their falling over. The typical phrase involves us saying, "My face! My face! My pretty, pretty face!"

Unfortunately, there seem to be many more bad refs who either reward blatant diving or see phantom fouls. Both teams I support in this tournament (USA and Australia) have been victimized by bad officiating.

Agreed -- the refereeing in the USA/Slovenia game was especially poor, I think. But in general I think the referees for the World Cup have been pretty good.
