I think Obama has made an excellent choice with his nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.  What will be interesting is seeing how the Republicans position themselves in opposing her -- there are going to be some strange contortions as they try to avoid looking like anti-female, anti-Hispanic bigots, especially when their own President George HW Bush  was the person who first nominated her to a federal judgeship, and she has twice gone through Senate confirmations.  Good luck there, folks.  Would you dare try to filibuster this nomination?

What I haven't copped on to is why they would *want* to. She's praised as being impartial and even-handed. He could have chosen someone far more liberal, and then they would have had cause to complain.

Of course they're going to try to knock down this candidate. She's too good. If nothing else, they'll want to set the tone for the next few choices Obama will have to make. Remember the principle:

Conservatives are people who can't admit they've lost.
Liberals are people who can't admit they've won.

The far right doesn't care about democracy. Losing elections proves that they were right. As these idiots shed the more intelligent former Republicans, they will fight harder. Cognitive Dissonance rules. They don't know how to do anything else.

And instead of marginalizing the radicals, the left wants to placate them. Pfeh. Adults are in charge at last, I wish they'd behave like it.

Why do you think the Republicans will try to avoid looking like anti-female, anti-Hispanic bigots?

They'll oppose Sonia Sotomayor or any candidate solely because a Democrat nominated her.

They can't bar some nomination or another for the next 3+ years. This is a good choice for them. Obstructing her just makes them look irresponsible.

Thus far Obama is living up to his promise of being too smart for the Republicans.

You're assuming they'll be rational and pragmatic.

I'm assuming they'll behave as they've been behaving, especially since Barack Obama won the election.
