Headed over to Millennicon after teaching classes on Friday -- and after stopping at the Apple Store to buy a new wireless mouse. Y'see, I use a wireless mouse as a 'clicker' when I doing presentations in class, and I tend to use my hands when I'm talking, and, well, I was waving my hands around as usual and the mouse all the sudden went flying across the room and, umm, fell apart and didn't work when I put it back together. So...

Anyway...

I headed over to the Millennicon, grabbed my badge and all from registration, and immediately was greeted by Lisa Garrison-Ragsdale and the con chair, Christy Johnson (who's been chair for ten years now, poor thing!), and was introduced to Cheryl, the GoH liaison who was currently shepherding John Scalzi about. Met up with Joel Zakem, who was on a panel, and Anne (better known here as [livejournal.com profile] netmouse) before the Opening Ceremonies, and afterward introduced myself (finally) to John Scalzi, who I've encountered through the intertubes but had never met in Real Life somehow. Found Jim Hines ([livejournal.com profile] jimhines) in the hallway and re-introduced myself to him. Had cake up in the con suite and talked to a few people. Listened in on Anne's panel on "Is The Short Story Dead" and introduced myself to Charlie Finlay afterward, another person whom I'd somehow managed to never meet in Real Life before -- an excellent writer, and judging from the panel, someone well worth talking to. Had my own first panel, then wandered into the lobby, where I would stay for the rest of the night.

Paul Melko and Jim Hines were sitting there, and sat down to chat with them. Eventually Jim wandered off to retire (what would his 20-year-old self have said about that, I ask you?), and our GoH replaced him, with Toby Buckell and Alethea (whose last name I don't know...) joining the little group, then Joel and Anne coming in just a little later. Pleasant conversation -- and, as you'd expect from reading Whatever, John is incredibly entertaining.

Good time. I gotta be back there in a bit for Saturday's panels and all. Looking forward to it!
