Nullifying Gay Marriages

Proving just how bigoted, closed-minded, and hate-filled they are, the people behind Proposition 8 in California are asking California's Supreme Court to nullify and void all the same-sex marriages that were performed in the short time they were legal. Their argument: ""There are no conditional clauses, exceptions, exemptions, or exclusions [in Proposition 8]: 'Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.' ... Its plain language encompasses both pre-existing and later-created same-sex (and polygamous) marriages, whether performed in California or elsewhere. With crystal clarity, it declares that they are not valid or recognized in California."

At the end of the article, CNN notes that "Proposition 8 supporters also announced the addition of Kenneth Starr to their legal team. Starr will serve as lead counsel and argue their case to the Supreme Court."

How these smug and righteous bigots have the gall to call themselves "Christian" is beyond me...

You know, exactly. I really would like to see Christianity liberated from this crap. (And I'm not even Christian anymore--I'm a Unitarian Universalist.)

Starr will be really disappointed when he learns that they won't give him $40 million to write a detailed account of the awful things that are done in same-sex marriage.

Unanswered is, "how many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man?" Can a marriage be between a woman and someone who has not walked down sufficient roads?

I find it encouraging, though, that CA Attorney General Jerry Brown has changed his mind about the prop. Before the election, he said that he would defend it against legal challenges but now he's filed this legal brief saying that it's unconstitutional (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/12/19/california-attorney-gener_0_n_152525.html). "It became evident that the Article 1 provision guaranteeing basic liberty, which includes the right to marry, took precedence over the initiative," he said in an interview Friday night. "Based on my duty to defend the law and the entire Constitution, I concluded the court should protect the right to marry even in the face of the 52 percent vote."

As a Christian, I cannot reconcile what the New Testament says with what these close-minded people are doing. I've been married for 23+ years, and same-sex marriage certainly hasn't threatened me, or my marriage. I live in one of the top five places for same-sex couples to live in the US, and I don't see these fellow residents of my town threatening my 2 children.The GLBT community here is active politically, and financially here. Wouldn't be the same here without the same-sex couples.
Times like this, I sometimes am reluctant to be Christian... now, I do belong to what's called a Reconciling Congregation within the Lutheran Church. What that means, is that same sex couples are welcomed, and are welcomed to participate in all aspects of the church.

my best friend (a Pentecostal) is so funny when it comes to this. whenever the issue is brought up. she just says, "you know, i think Jesus would be more concerned over all the people we're killing and starving to death than over whether or not gay people are getting married."

and i tend to agree with that. i think that this issue is a scapegoat issue to try to make us focus on something other than our crappy economy and the war. it's stupid, really. let them at least have benefits, you know? people are going to live how they want to regardless of what the law says about it anyway.
