I just watched the video and I must say that am was really impressed by his comments on the prejudice against Muslims in this country. That alone is worth the endorsement.
I thought that -- had Powell decided to run back in 2000 and been able to snag the Republican nomination -- that he had a decent chance of being the first black president.
Would have been a different world had that happened, too...
"I'm also troubled by, not what Senator McCain says, but what members of the [Republican] Party say... such things as 'Well, you know that Mr Obama is a Muslim'.
"Well, the correct answer is, 'He's not a Muslim, he's a Christian, he's always been a Christian'. But the really right answer is, "What if he is?' Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer is 'No', that's not America."
I'm glad to see, though I will bet that the conservative pundits will spin it as "well, the only reason he's supporting Obama is because they're both black."
It'll be -- in their minds -- about race. Nothing else.
And gee, right after posting that, I went and started reading some friend's posts, and found that Rush Limbaugh and George Will have already said exactly that: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/19/limbaugh-george-will-powe_n_135968.html
