The mud-throwing will now commence. According to this WaPo article, McCain has decided that talking about his time as a war prisoner, his 'maverick' status in Congress, his 'straight talk', his plans for the economy, and how the surge will win in Iraq hasn't helped him.

It's time to go seriously negative. McCain's positive commercials have been pulled. They're going to attack Obama's honesty, his associations with criminal elements, and his fitness to serve as president. " "We are looking for a very aggressive last 30 days," said Greg Strimple, one of McCain's top advisers. "We are looking forward to turning a page on this financial crisis and getting back to discussing Mr. Obama's aggressively liberal record and how he will be too risky for Americans." "

Should be a fun last month, eh?

Does this mean that one can now talk about McCain's character flaws and associates.

No. Of course not. That would be unfair. What WAS I thinking?

Sigh! It's going to be bloody out there.

The annoying this is that negative advertising works, even if those on the receiving end know that the statements are lies.

I think it will help McCain a lot, but I don't think it will flip the election. My only real worry there is a bin Lain video.

Ron here...

Negative campaigns work because us folks put too much emphasis on fear and not enough on truth. It's happening on both sides, of course. I read any shift toward more negative as a standard measure that says the camp in question thinks they're falling behind.

I feel like descending into a news-free bunker and not coming out again until it's time to vote.
