Not in any particular order:

...Because I believe that religion should be kept firmly and completely separate from government and all governmental decisions.
...Because I believe that Science, not Mythology, should be taught in Science classes.
...Because I believe that Sex Ed means educating children about all aspects of sexual behavior, how to behave responsibly in that arena, and how avoid consequences for such.
...Because I believe that if two adults love each other and wish to marry, they should be able to do so, regardless of their genders
...Because I believe that a woman should have the right to choose.
...Because I believe that the Federal Budget should be balanced, and, hey, while the Republicans talk about that all the time, the only time it's actually happened in my lifetime has been under a Democratic president.
...Because I believe that our tax structure should be more fairly balanced (frankly, I [EDITED VERSION] once found the idea of a flat tax regardless of income level to be very interesting, but now I'm not so certain...).
...Because I believe that it's best to be talking to your enemies, not simply threatening them.
...Because I believe that it's better to have a Supreme Court who will err on the side of granting too many freedoms to citizens rather than curtailing those we have.
...Because I believe that oil is finite while wind and sun are not, and that drilling for more oil (and thus handing more profits to the already obscene profits of the oil companies) isn't the answer.
...Because I believe that the science (oops, there's that word again) on Global Climate Change is rather compelling, and that we need to act quickly to offset its effects.

I'm sure I'll think of other reasons, but those will do for the moment. With a Republican administration, exactly none of the above will likely be true.

What are your reasons for voting the way you'll vote?

....Because at this point, I would vote for a Pet Rock rather than a Republican rubber stamp. At least the Democrats would tack and sail off in another direction. Sadly, I do think we'll still be headed down a strange path, but it will be a DIFFERENT strange path.

All of the above, plus I believe that tax policies should be more progressive, not less. (Unearned income taxed at a lower level than earned income?)
Also, I've always thought that a flat tax is incredibly regressive, not liberal, unless you complicate the system with credits for those with lower incomes. Why else would Steve Forbes be for it?

You've pretty much covered it.

I'd probably change "Global Warming" to "Global Climate Change" so people would stop saying, in the middle of a Northern winter, "So where's this global warming?"

I might add, "Because the last 8 years have been an unmitigated disaster and the only viable alternative to voting Democratic is to vote for someone who will continue the same."

I agree with everything you have stated above. I have been a registered Republican and even worked as a legislative aide for an OH Republican State Rep for a few years. I have evolved in my political and religious views over the last several years and as I have gotten older, I realize that tolerance and compassion are more valuable than might and security. No matter how much money we spend we will never be "secure" in our freedom from attack because that is the way life is. If we are not attacked from outside our country, there will be attacks inside. I believe we CAN minimize the attacks on both fronts if we show the world we can be both strong and tolerant. Maybe I am naive, but I think the world would be better place overall if we helped others achieve their dreams rather than squelching them, showed more love than hate and offered assistance when people are in need rather than telling them to buck it up.

Thanks for putting these thoughts down. You have given me much to ponder today.

Yeah, I'm not sure 'liberal' is the right adjective to paste onto flat tax, but...

In fact, I'll go make that change right now -- good editing!

Yeah, I kind of need to find a new symbol. GWB has essentially BEEN a Pet Rock, after all (letting Rove and Cheney make the key decisions, and seeming to just be along for the ride), and look where that has gotten us.

Can I vote for Happy Fun Ball? Oh, wait, the Republicans have nominated one for VP....maybe not....

I like and agree with your list and what the other commenters have had to say so far.
I usually try to avoid paying attention to politics because it just makes me want to barf. It usually comes down to picking the lesser of the evils (which I think is just wrong.) This year, I see a huge gulf between the two sides that it's easy to vote.

I'm voting straight GOP ticket because when the delegates started chanting "drill baby drill", well, I got all teary eyed.

Also, the press has been very unfair to Gov. Palin. She is an amazing woman who sold a plane on ebay. Also, she's hot!

I think you've put it very well! Plus, the Democrats aren't smug and sarcastic. *g*

From: [identity profile] sleigh.livejournal.com

Well... in fairness sometimes they can be, though it usually comes back to bite them in the ass. But Obama doesn't appear to be so.

From: [identity profile] sleigh.livejournal.com

I saw a huge gulf last time, too, but I ended up on the losing side of it. :-)

Flat tax is the conservative holy grail.

I'm disappointed that the concerns of the extremely poor, disabled, and mentally ill seem to have become obsolete in American politics. When I was younger, there was dialogue about the poor, but now everyone seems to have noticed they don't vote.

You're doing it backwards. You're supposed to be a liberal when you're young and a conservative when you're older.

I have a question I've been worrying over for some time, that falls along these lines.

Do you feel that it's impossible for a person of elected office to have a personal belief that doesn't slosh over on their ability to do the job they have or wish to attain?
