I like He woke up ... somewhere. It says we're in the middle of it, and the main character hasn't any more of a clue than I, the reader, do. Let's go! I tend to prefer shorter first lines than longer ones, to the point that I've (consciously and unconsciously) emulated in my own writing Raymond Feist's habit of very basic first lines.
