Megen came down to see Katie yesterday and say her goodbyes. Last night, Denise and I both noticed that Katie's breathing was becoming more labored. We'd been tentatively planning to make an appointment at the vets for Thursday, but it was obvious that removing the fluid from her lungs had only been a stopgap: a welcome one, since it gave Devon and Megen the chance to see her. We decided to call the vet in the morning...

We'd rigged the upstairs bathroom into a 'hospice' for Katie, with her bed, food and water, and litterbox only a few steps from her. When Denise checked on Katie at midnight, she was in the bed; same when I checked on her at 3:00 AM. When Denise went in at 6:00, Katie wasn't in the bed, but in her carrier — the carrier she hated, the carrier from which she used to run and hide when we'd pull it out, the carrier that she fought not to be in, since she associated it with the vets.

We took that as an omen.

Denise called the vet when they opened and made an appointment to come in this morning. Katie, as usual, didn't want to come out of the carrier when we arrived, but I reached in and we put her between us on the bench, and the attendant went to get the doctor. We were petting her...

...when she lifted her head up to us and gave a cry. And died.

The doc came in and confirmed that her heart had stopped. We spent a few minutes saying our goodbyes, and holding each other while we cried.

On the way home, it started to rain. That seemed appropriate...

Goodbye, Katie of Some Other Cat's Tail, Katie the White. You were much loved.
