Megen has made the decision not to put the $1100+ in the Neon. My gut agrees with that decision, since she'd already put about the same amount in the car already this year, and Bluebook value on it is less than $1,500, and even if she fixed it, she'd still have a car with no A.C. and a head gasket leak that one day will cost yet another $1,500 to repair.

But... that leaves us with the issue of finding another newer and more reliable car. She has a full-time job now, so can at least afford a (low) monthly payment, but we're trying to cobble together as large a down payment for her as we can, so her monthly payment will be as low as possible. And we need to find something ASAP, so we can get our car back from her...

In my office at NKU, there was an ancient Dell computer. I disassembled it and put in the corner on the floor and just used Denise's laptop (which I use for classes). My Dept. Chair called to let me know that my computer was on the replacement list for this year. I asked if it was possible to get a Mac rather than a Dell; rather to my surprise, I found that it was. So I should have a shiny new iMac on my desk come next semester! Whee!

I passed the 10,000 word mark on A MAGIC OF DAWN today -- pretty rapid progress for me! However, I have deadlines looming for my material in the third book of the latest WILD CARDS trilogy, so I don't think the progress on DAWN will be quite so fast for the next few months while I turn my attention to that...

This weekend is Midwestcon here in Cincinnati. Gay is flying in to bring Rusty down for the con (Yay!) and [livejournal.com profile] jdonat and [livejournal.com profile] mdonat will be there (Yay!) but missing Kristin (Boo!). [livejournal.com profile] haniaw won't be there (Boo!) and neither will the [livejournal.com profile] minnehahas (Boo!). Still, I'm sure we'll manage to have fun. Besides, the missing people will mean there will be more room on [livejournal.com profile] beccal's comfy couches.

I Googled Midwestcon and am still not sure exactly what the "con" is about - is it primarily sci fi/fantasy writers & fans?

Ah Midwestcon, do you still play waterbrawl in the pool all afternoon?

Wow, Midwestcon! I stopped going after I moved out of Pittsburgh in 1978...

Have a good time!

Check Craigslist, etc. There are some fairly reliable $1500 or $3000 "junker" cars out there.

MWC isn't particularly 'about' anything. It's a relaxacon: no programming at all, no guests of honor -- just several sf fans (largely of the midwestern variety, and also probably largely local) sitting around talking, splashing in the pool, playing wizard, etc. Very low key. Very. There's a (small) huckster room, a (small) art show, a consuite, and maybe a few room parties here and there. Beyond myself and Mike Resnick (we're both local), I don't know that there will be any other writers there, though Gay Haldeman (Joe Haldeman's spouse) will be there; Joe won't be, alas.

The 'official' website is here: http://www.cfg.org/midwestcon/index.htm

Well, the pool generally gets some action in the afternoon, but not as much as I remember from the late 70s/early 80s MWCs.

I did check Craiglist (especially after it worked so well when we sold our elderly Jetta a few weeks ago... though now I wonder about that timing.) Trouble with Craiglist is that it's a cash-basis situation, and there isn't much cash...

Alas, I won't be at Midwestcon. I'll be a little more than an hour away, visiting family, but will be in Ohio such a short time I just couldn't figure out how to get to Cincinnati and back and still do all the family stuff.

Alas and alack -- another one bites the dust! *sniff*

I'm very sad that I won't be there this year. Maybe I'll see you in Michigan in July?

I won't be there this year (alas), but some of my design work will be! I hope you'll stop by the Reno in 2011 (http://www.rcfi.org) bid party Saturday night and pick up a flyer from Ben, Jim, and Laurie. Fun art from Brad Foster, layout and design by yours truly.

This Saturday, I'll take a walk and wish I were there, walking with Denise. I so enjoyed our walk and conversation last year!

Ack! I thought you were coming.. Rats.
Oh, well, we'll see you in September, and in November at Windycon. We've already picked out nice sitting/talking/etc areas in the lobby. Many many places to start the Haniazone...
