The only explanation I've seen in the generic "leaving for the sake of his family" that everyone uses. We'll have to wait and see where he re-surfaces...
The phrasing "leaving for the sake of my family" (vs. the usual "to spend more time with my family") suggests that he's leaving to protect his family from the consequences if he stayed. Who's got the goods on him: Patrick Fitzgerald? Henry Waxman? The CIA? Larry Flynt?
More a case of they want him thrown in jail for contempt of court (for not answering questions) soon so that he can pardoned before Bush is forced out.
I think by family, he meant Satan and all the tormented souls of hell. Since he has wreaked his havoc upon the mortal plane, he's been called home to spend more time with "family."
...of course now I have this image (somewhat Gary Larsen-ish) of Rove standing at a podium in hell giving a speech with a big MISSION ACCOMPLISHED banner hanging behind him, flames lapping all around. Tap, tap, tap. "Is this thing on?"
