But you're absolutely correct in that assessment (except that I don't think I'll ever qualify as Mr. Stylish!) -- it's not a tool designed for long, insightful essay work: for that, there's no substitute for a true computer with a full keyboard. An iPhone (or Treo or Blackberry) don't invite the user to sit down and get comfortable, forget everything but the words, and take your time composing a post or reply. I can't imagine writing a long post or a story on the device, nor do I expect to use it for LJ posting in the future -- I was just playing with the new toy. Heck, this reply I'm writing at the computer as I take a break from working on the novel-in-progress...

I honestly don't know the answer to that -- I'll have to research it (actually, since I have an Apple bluetooth keyboard somewhere here in my office, I could self-research it...). But -- even if that does work (with Treo or Blackberry or iPhone) you're still dealing with a tiny screen. If I were going out of town and needed to do serious work, I'd still drag along my laptop...

Did you see this? IPhone Flaw Lets Hackers Take Over, Security Firm Says (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/23/technology/23iphone.html). Admittedly it is my understanding that this happens far less frequently with Apple products than Microsoft products . . .

I did see it -- for this to work, you'd have to first be tricked into browsing to a particular website with the iPhone, at which point the website can download malware to the iPhone which could allow the hacker to pull files from the phone, and conceivably even use the phone's camera to take pictures or to record the user's voice via the microphone, as long as the iPhone stays connected to that wireless network.

Expect a software patch ASAP... and until then, stay on trusted sites -- that would be my advice.

Thanks -- though the release of the book (INSIDE STRAIGHT) isn't until January. Still, it's fun to be playing in the Wild Cards sandbox once again.

Update -- Apple released version 1.0.1 of the iPhone firmware a couple days ago. Haven't checked the details, but I'll bet that killed this particular vulnerability.
