Devon's Birthday
Today's Devon's 22nd birthday, though I still remember his birth very well. Because Megen had been a C-section baby, the doctor had told Denise that this one would likely be the same... and it was. I was in the operating room with Denise as they were prepping her for the section. Dr. Pottschmidt was our OB-Gyn, and he had a young resident in with him. During the course of conversation, the resident found out that I was a science fiction/fantasy writer, and he suddenly became rather more geeky than he already was, declaring that he was an avid fan of the genre. Dr. P seemed mostly annoyed at the guy's chatter. Denise did too, since she was understandably nervous and anxious -- it wasn't helping to relax her, and it was distracting me from attending to her.
As Dr. P was about to make the first incision, the resident looked at me -- I could see him grinning under the surgical mask -- and joked "Hey, this is just like Alien!" Denise's eyes widened. Dr. P straightened, glared at the resident as he pointed his finger to the door, and said "Leave! Right now!"
The chastened resident scurried away, Dr. P apologized to us... and a few minutes later, Devon was born.
Not an alien. Though there were a few times that we wondered. :-)
